The Appalachian State wrestling team has released its schedule for the 2009-10 season.
The Apps, who finished in third place at the Southern Conference tournament last spring, will open the season with an intra-squad meet on October 28. They will host the Black and Gold meet on November 3. The Mountaineers open the season at the Michigan State open in East Lansing on November 8. The Southern Conference opener will be at home against UNC-Greensboro on January 14; the SoCon tournament will be at Davidson on March 6.
The Apps will be led by first-year coach JohnMark Bentley, who has been ASU's top assistant the last two years. Bentley is a former coach at Watauga High, and an undefeated four-time state champion at Avery High. He also had a very successful college career at North Carolina and Oklahoma State.
Jacob Earp, who won a state title for Watauga High during his sophomore year at 130 pounds and was a state runner up his senior year, will be a red-shirt freshman for the Apps this season. Sava Kostas, a state runner up his senior year at WHS, will be a rising sophomore on this year's team at ASU. As a true freshman last year, Kostas, who wrestled at 149 pounds, was 10-15 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Conference. He also had two pinfalls and two major decisions to his credit. Frank Celorrio, a national qualifier, returns as well. The Apps were 6-16 in dual meets last season.
