|Capel, Kachmarik named to ASU coaching staff|

Appalachian State men’s basketball coach Buzz Peterson has announced that Jason Capel and Jamie Kachmarik will join his staff as assistant coaches this season.
The move completes Peterson’s coaching staff for the upcoming season. Capel and Kachmarik will join holdover Matt McMahon, who begins his tenth year, on the sidelines.
Capel, who was a star player and a two-time all-Atlantic Coast Conference performer for the University of North Carolina, played for Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty from 1998-2002. He led the Tar Heels to the Final Four in 2000, and he led them in scoring, rebounding and steals in 2001-02. Capel played professionally overseas in Serbia, Japan and Italy, and most recently, he also played in the NBA Developmental League. Capel, who majored in communications, has also been a college basketball analyst for Raycom Sports.
Kachmarik, a Bowling Green University graduate, was the primary recruiting coach at Coastal Carolina during Peterson’s tenure. During his stay at Coastal Carolina, Kachmarik recruited one Big South Player of the Year, two Big South Freshmen of the Year, and four Big South all-freshman selections. He also brought in Jack Leasure, who was named CoSidaESPN The Magazine First Team All-Academic and the Big South Male Scholar Athlete of the Year at Coastal Carolina in 2007-08. The Chanticleers won 83 games during his tenure, which also included a 20-win season in 2005-06 season, :Peterson’s first and the school’s first 20-win campaign since 1992-93.
Kachmarik began his coaching career as a video coordinator at Ohio State under then coach Jim O'Brien.
