cricket.jpgHundreds of High Country Residents got a closer look at what our local emergency personnel do on a daily basis at Saturday’s Emergency Fest.

Several agencies were in attendance and representatives showed residents some of the equipment that is used on various emergency calls.

WINGS Air Rescue and Med Center Air landed helicopters in Appalachian State’s Raley Parking Lot, giving residents a chance to look around the choppers and even take pictures inside.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol set up a small course with road cones, beer goggles, and a golf cart to demonstrate how one’s driving skills are diminished while intoxicated.

Safe Kids Watauga County showed the dangers of leaving a small child in a vehicle in the heat.

The Cricket Volunteer Fire Department had a child-friendly display where future firefighters could put out a fire made of plywood with their fire hose.

One of the highlights of the event was the Cove Creek Volunteer Fire Department ripping a Mercury Sable to pieces with the Jaws of Life in a demonstration where they were removing an injured driver after a wreck.

Visitors could also see demonstrations from the Wilkes County Bomb Squad, an area S.W.A.T. team, and several other area emergency agencies.
