The National Weather Service has issued multiple flash flood and severe thunderstorm watches and warnings for several areas of the High Country today.

The latest, and most threatening, seems to be a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter-sized hail and winds in excess of 60 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service located the storm north of Grandfather Mountain near Blowing Rock around 6:00.

Officials have issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northwest North Carolina, especially the western region of Watauga County, until 7:30 this evening.

Locations specifically mentioned in the warning were Foscoe, Valle Crucis, Rominger, Sugar Grove, and Peoria.

Officials said this storm is dangerous.  Anyone in its path should prepare immediately for damaging winds, destructive hail, and deadly cloud to ground lightning.  Anyone outside should move to a shelter, preferably inside a strong building away from windows.

Multiple areas of the High Country reported dime-sized hail earlier this afternoon.
