An Avery County deputy has been cleared of any wrongdoing in connection with the fatal shooting of Harry Lowman Jr. of Pilot Road.
The original incident occurred on January 8 when officers responded to the residence after a gunshot was heard. When officers attempted to make contact with Lowman, there was no response. Involuntary commitment papers were sought by family members, and when deputies attempted to serve the documents, Lowman allegedly pointed a long gun. Extra guns and ammunition were found next to Lowman. Deputy Keith Laws fired his weapon, killing Lowman. It is procedure for the SBI to investigate all officer-involved shootings. The investigation found that Laws acted in defense of himself and other officers.
