Watauga High baseball coach Pete Hardee announced on Saturday night that the Northwestern 4A championship game will be played on Monday night beginning at 7 pm at MSDeal Stadium in Granite Falls, NC.
Our coverage begins at 6:30 pm on 100.7 MAC-FM. WHS (17-6, and the No.1 seed) takes on a South Caldwell team the Pioneers have beaten twice last season. And Monday’s game will also be a rematch of last year’s championship game as South prevailed, 4-1 behind Cody Penny. The Pioneers are making their eighth appearance in the finals; South is making its sixth consecutive trip. The Pioneers have won two tournament titles, the last coming in 2000. The Spartans (18-4) have won this thing four consecutive times. It will be a battle of right-handers as Jon Sharpe goes for WHS; Cody Poarch goes for South Caldwell. WHS will open the state playoffs at home next Friday night against Weddington, the No.5 seed in the Southwestern 4A Conference. Weddington lost a four-five match-up against Butler on Friday night. The Bulldogs prevailed, 7-6. And the WHS softball team, which finished in a last-place tie with East Burke, won the draw on Saturday and draws the No.6 seed. The Pioneers (5-15) will play at South Caldwell (the No.3 seed) on Monday night in Sawmills at 6pm.
