Jason Hunter, who was the starting defensive end on Appalachian State’s 2005 national championship team, is back at work.

Hunter, who was released by the Green Bay Packers this week, landed with the Detroit Lions on Tuesday. Hunter, who signed a free agent contract with the Packers in 2006 after he wasn’t selected in the National Football League draft, played three seasons with Green Bay, and he led the Packers in special teams tackles in 2007. Hunter scored the game-winning touchdown in the national championship game as he returned Eric Sanders’ fumble 15 yards for the deciding score as ASU beat Northern Iowa 21-16 in Chattanooga.

Richie Williams, who was the starting quarterback and Hunter teammate on ASU’s national title team in 2005, was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League this week. But sources say Williams is currently talking with Hamilton’s biggest rival, the Toronto Argonauts about possibly playing for them this season. The CFL season officially kicks off on July 1st. Williams passed for 2,077 yards and 11 touchdown passes, and he ran for 531 yards and scored two touchdowns in 52 games during his three-year stay with the Ti-Cats.
