Former Appalachian State football players Richie Williams and Jason Hunter have been released by their respective teams.
Williams, who quarterbacked ASU to its first national championship in 2005 has been released by the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League. A three-year veteran, Williams, who signed a three-year, free-agent contract with the Ti-Cats in 2006, played in 52 games. He passed for 2,077 yards and threw 11 touchdown passes. He also ran for 531 yards and scored two touchdowns in his short career.
Hunter, who wasn’t selected in the National Football League draft, signed a free-game contract with the Green Bay Packers of the NFL in 2006. He was a starting defensive end on the Mountaineers national title team in 2005. He returned Eric Sanders’ fumble 15 yards for the game-winning score with 9:14 left in the game as ASU rallied to beat Northern Iowa 21-16 in the national championship game in Chattanooga. Hunter, who was moved to outside linebacker by the Packers, led them in special team tackles in 2007.
