A 27-year-old man from the Sugar Grove community was arrested by the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office after a high-speed chase involving two children that topped 100 miles-per-hour.

Captain Kelly Redmon of the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office said James Daniel Wallace was pulled over for speeding on the 105 Bypass around 7:00 Thursday evening.

Redmon said Wallace pulled his 2000 model Chevrolet Blazer over to the side of the road and when the officer approached the vehicle to issue a speeding violation, Wallace pulled back onto the roadway.

According to Redmon the officer chased Wallace’s Blazer down the bypass onto Highway 105 toward Foscoe, where the chase briefly surpassed 100 miles-per-hour.

Wallace reportedly turned right onto Bairds Creek Road and right again onto Laurel Fork Road where he pulled over because other officers had responded to the chase.

Redmon said there were two children in the vehicle with Wallace, a four year old and a five year old.

In all, Redmon said there were five responding officers and one involved in the actual chase.

Wallace was arrested and charged with felony fleeing to avoid arrest, misdemeanor child abuse, driving without insurance, reckless driving, speeding, and displaying a fictitious tag.

The children were turned over to child services.

Redmon said he was unsure if the children belonged to Wallace.
