Congresswoman Virginia Foxx visited Alleghany County Wednesday to present medals to a 76-year-old Korean War veteran.
Foxx’ spokesperson, Aaron Groen, told High Country Radio the congresswoman would be presenting the medals to Dan Abernathy of Sparta.
Although Abernathy now lives in Sparta, he was born in Morganton and was raised in Valdese before volunteering for the U.S. Army.
After graduating from jump school in 1951, Abernathy served as a paratrooper in the 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, the 82nd Airborne Division, and served in Korea and Japan with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team.
Abernathy was honorably discharged in 1954, but then signed up with the Army Reserves in North Carolina. After serving two years in North Carolina’s Army Reserve, Abernathy was honorably discharged.
Abernathy’s service didn’t end in North Carolina, as he also served with the Florida National Guard until 1960.
Foxx presented Abernathy with the United Nations Service Medal for Korea, the Korean Service Medal, the Army Parachutist Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
