Several area emergency agencies are participating in a series of drills this week that will prepare them to handle various situations.

The first drill was held Monday around noon at the Holmes Convocation Center and the Watauga Swim Complex, when emergency responders were faced with a simulated tear gas encounter to a group of volunteer Watauga High students.

The second event began early Tuesday morning when area hospitals had to deal with patients who showed the first symptoms of exposure to a biohazardous agent.

The drills will wrap up around 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday when emergency personnel from Asheville will arrive and participate with a biohazard exercise on decontamination.
