While rain still had not hit the 800-acre fire at Shortoff, the 67-acre fire near Cold Mountain is 100 percent contained. Dobson Knob’s 599-acre blaze is not far off with its 95 percent containment. According to Public Information Officer Bill Sweet, the steep conditions and dry weather are making a mess of things on Shortoff. Firefighters have a plan, he says.
Back-burning efforts are expected to begin today. Firefighters will burn debris so the fire has nowhere to spread, he says. Trails are still closed in the Linville Gorge Wilderness until further notice.
