The Watauga High men’s tennis team blew a 4-2 lead in singles play and lost a non-conference match to Newton-Conover, 5-4. The loss drops WHS’s record to 9-2 on the year. Winners for WHS on Monday night were: Steve Lake at No. 1 singles, Michael Smith at No. 2, Brian Geldmeier at No. 4, and Davis Roberts at No. 5. The Pioneers are scheduled to play Hickory on Wednesday night at home. But rain is in the forcast.
The Watauga High men’s golf team finished sixth at the Mimosa Country Club in Morganton on Monday. The Pioneers had a team score of 343. Unfortunately, that effort leaves WHS 47 shots behind East Burke for the third and final playoff spot in the Northwestern 4A Conference. The Cavaliers took over third place on Monday by firing a team score of 321, besting A.C. Reynolds by six shots, and claiming the number three seed by four strokes. Alexander Central led the way with a 303. Freedom finished second with a 318. The Cougars lead the conference standing with a 911 team score, and by 59 strokes. Freedom is in second place with a team score of 970. Mitchell McGlamory of Freedom was the leading medallist on Monday as he fired an even-par 72. Ben Beason paced WHS with an 82. The Pioneers travel to Marion next Monday. McDowell will be the host school.
And in baseball on Monday night, there was one game on the schedule as Freedom won a non-conference game by beating Avery, 6-5. The Patriots, who won one game all of last year, are now 3-5.
