The Watauga High Jazz Band performed along side the John Brown Quintet last night at the Haye’s Performing Arts Center. The event culminated a weeklong residency where the professional musicians worked with the students. Watauga High Program Director Billy Ralph Winkler said the experience has been incredible. John Brown, leader of the Quintet, has also toured with one of America’s premiere jazz families – the Marsalis brothers. The Watauga students impressed him. He was he was very inspired by what the students did this week saying that it has taken music to a new level for the Quintet. That’s exactly what the residency program is designed to do. No way to tell who gets the most out of the program. Last night, no doubt, the audience was appreciating it either way.
