Age Cutoff Changed for Kindergarten Students PDF Print

State lawmakers have changed the minimum age for children entering kindergarten.


According to the Associated Press, the shift that was approved in 2007 and will take effect this fall.


To enter public schools, a child must now turn five years old before August 31.  The previous cutoff date was October 16.


This measure is expected decrease public school enrollment by about 11,700 children statewide, which is expected to save $50 million during the next budget year.
