Days after the area saw several inches of snow, warm weather broke a record for a daily high temperature on Grandfather Mountain.
According to Landis Wofford of Grandfather Mountain, the temperature reached 53 degrees on Sunday, which set a new daily high temperature record. The previous record for February 8th was 52 degrees set in 1957 and tied in 2001.
Wofford said Sunday’s temperature is still far from the warmest February day ever recorded atop the mountain as the all-time highest temperature for the month is 64 degrees. This mark was set on February 26th, 1977 and tied February 15th and 16th, 1989.
