Watauga County Parks and Recreation will be applying for a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund Grant to add new features to the park on Brookshire Road.

Watauga County Parks and Recreation Director Stephen Poulos said the money could be used to construct a basketball court with a shelter, a walking track, a sand volleyball court, and concessions for the new soccer complex.

Poulos said parks and recreation office had applied for the grant last year, but didn’t receive one of the highly competitive grants.

Poulos explained about 90 organizations applied for a grant last year and less than 30 received grant money.

According to Poulos, even fewer grants will be awarded this year because of the current economic conditions.

A public hearing was held Tuesday evening at the Watauga County Board of Commissioners meeting, but Poulos said no one spoke in favor of or against the recreation office reapplying for the grant.

Poulos said the parks and recreation office will be informed in May if they have been awarded the grant money.
