A series of graves found at the construction site of the new Watauga High School will be relocated to Mount Lawn Memorial Park, Commissioners decided today.
The decision was unanimous after County Manager Robert Nelson said construction crews would prefer the graves at a separate site. Commissioners also feared having to constantly run high schoolers off the property. Currently 25 graves have been found on the property. While Mount Lawn cannot provide a fenced-in area for the graves, a separate section designated with plaques should not be a problem, Commission Chair Jim Deal said. Family members of those buried on the site were not present at the meeting.
