NC Unemployment Rate up to 7.9% PDF Print

North Carolina’s unemployment rate increased to 7.9 percent last month according to the state’s Employment Security Commission.

 

This is the highest unemployment rate the tarheel state has seen since the early 80’s.

 

ESC Chairman Harry Payne, Jr. said that global and national economic challenges have had an impact on North Carolina, facing many employers with layoffs and forcing them to cut back hours.

 

This time last year, the state had an unemployment rate of 4.7 percent.

 

The industries that faced the highest increases in unemployment were trade, transportation, & utilities, and professional & business services, while jobs in the government and educational & health services increased.

 

The ESC announced the national unemployment rate increased slightly since last month to 6.7 percent.
