While water conservation methods and weekend rain have helped, the drought is still on for several counties in North Carolina, including Avery.
While 83 counties are in drought, only 17, including Avery and Burke, are on the non-essential water use list. Residents of Avery are asked not to wash cars or use water for ornamental purposes. The drought conditions have affected over three fourths of the state. The mountains have been hit the hardest. According to the National Weather Service, the mountains received the smallest benefit from the weekend storms.
