Two bills calling for the study of capital punishment
in North Carolina were heard yesterday in committee.
One of the bills would
suspend executions for two years. This would give time for further review.
Dissenters made their opposition known yesterday. Substitute versions of the
bills have been adopted, a move designed to keep the bills alive for the whole session.
Opponents believe continuing debate is futile, saying it has gone on too long.
