Avery County’s drug dogs have yet to disappoint. Two separate incidents resulted in arrests that would not have been possible without K-9 units, said Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye.
One of the most recent successes resulted in the arrest of 26-year-old Jonathan Rhodes of Bristol, Virginia. Rhodes was initially investigated for driving left of the center line. That investigation and an exterior vehicle sniff by a K-9 led to charges of methamphetamine possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional charges may be pending, depending on SBI lab results. Rhodes is in Avery County custody under an $11,000 secured bond.
Another incident Frye is proud of occurred over the weekend when, again thanks to the drug dogs, 26-year-old Christopher Hamilton of Reidsville was charged with possession of methadose pills, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. 7 methadose pills, some of which had already been split, two straws and a pill crusher were found. Hamilton was released after making the $3,000 bond.
