goss.jpgIncumbent North Carolina State Senator, Steve Goss, is running for reelection to represent the state’s 45th District.

The Democrat is an ordained Southern Baptist minister, a former high school teacher, and varsity football coach.

Goss has pastored in local churches and served overseas in Tokyo, Japan, as he was appointed by the International Mission Board.

Goss and his wife, Phyllis, have been married for 36 years and the two have two daughters.

The representative is originally from Ashe County, but he and his family have resided in Boone for the past 16 years.

Goss graduated from Appalachian State before furthering his education at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Goss said if reelected, his top priority will still be education.  Goss explained that education has already exceeded 60 percent of the state budget, and the state legislatures talk about education every day.

Goss expressed he was wary of the recent economic bailout, and when asked what politician he looks up to or would compare himself to, he reserved comment until after we saw the result of the bailout.

When asked about how he would keep gang violence from becoming an issue in the area, Goss explained that the current $10 million budget to combat crime isn’t enough.

Goss explained, “We’ve got to have people trained in specific areas to identify the gang models, to identify the signs, to identify these problems before they get off the ground.”
