Warnings may be issued on parents of unattended kids PDF Print

A bill that cleared the House this week would give parents a warning if they left a child 8-years-old or younger in an unattended car.

Sponsored by Rep. Alice Underhill of Craven, the measure would only grant a warning on the first offense.  A repeat offense would be a misdemeanor. The court also may allow the violator to complete a community education program instead of being penalized.  The measure would only apply in cases where the child is not in the immediate proximity or sightline of a parent.
