ASU Relay for Life Raises $6,000 PDF Print

Appalachian State held their Relay for Life event last weekend, and although they had to battle quite a few obstacles, it was called a success by those involved.

Jeana Sigmon is a senior at Appalachian State, and she was the Relay Chair for the event.

Sigmon said this year’s relay had to overcome quite a few difficulties as it was the same day as Appalachian State’s football season opener at LSU, it was the first weekend students were on campus, and on top of that, it was Labor Day weekend.

The Relay for Life event that was held at Watauga High School is powered by members of the community, but the one ASU puts on is almost completely put on by students.

Sigmon said there were about 75 people who stayed all night Friday into Saturday.  These were mostly ASU students with a few parents.

Sigmon reported they raised over $6,000 for cancer research at the relay, and explained, “I think we did really well for the amount of people that were involved.”

Sigmon said ASU will sponsor another Relay for Life event in April, so football games and holiday weekends won’t interfere.

Sigmon said she hopes to raise over $20,000 in the spring.
