Banner Elk Officer Fred Shrader is back to work today, according to Chief Bill Burleson.
Shrader is doing well, according to Burleson. Shrader is not permitted to comment on the shooting. The SBI is investigating the incident, which occurred near Pappy’s Barbeque two Saturdays ago. Shrader allegedly fired at a vehicle to protect himself and other officers. Two suspects were shot, but have been released from the hospital. 20-year-old Crystal Marie Arnold of Roan Mountain and 27-year-old Nathaniel Scott Rainbolt of Hampton were initially under suspicion of drunk driving. The two were in a pickup police believe was stolen from Mountain City. Shrader fired when a roadblock set up north of Pappy’s Barbeque failed to stop the suspects. The State Bureau of Investigation always investigates officer-involved shootings.
