Attorney General Roy Cooper joined 7 attorney generals from other states in signing a letter asking MySpace to provide information on how many registered sex offenders are using the site.
The measure comes months after MySpace announced it was partnering with Sentinel Tech Holding Corporation to build a database with information on sex offenders in the United States. According to the letter signed by the attorney generals, it is understood from that data that thousands of known sex offenders have MySpace pages. MySpace assures it is doing its best to keep its sites clean from predators, but Cooper says that isn’t enough. He wants to know exactly what steps MySpace is taking to keep the sites safe. Cooper has presented legislation to the North Carolina General Assembly that would make it a felony for registered sex offenders to use social networking sites.
