Happy Arbor Day! PDF Print

It’s Arbor Day, and Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson was excited to see second graders from Parkway Elementary and Appalachian Christian School at this morning’s celebration. She believes it's important to teach kids at an early age to love trees. She's not the only one.

Mother Nature herself was on hand to pass out stickers and pencils to the crowd. Complete with botanist Dr. Zack Murrell, the event, held at sunny Daniel Boone Native Gardens, showcased one of Boone's most valuable resources: Trees!  The Town of Boone was presented with the Tree City USA Award for the 14th year in a row, as well as the Tree City USA Growth Award. Individually recognized was Max Fletcher, whose dedication to every Arbor Day celebration in Boone earned him the Arbor Day Award. John Gransinger was absent, but awarded the Tree Conservation Award. Kids went home with their very own red oak tree, the same tree Fletcher planted in the Gardens to commemorate Arbor Day 2007.
