Lenoir Police Department got a call this week about a deer causing a traffic hazard on Creekway Drive. According to Lt. Rodney Jordan, it appeared the deer had been raised as a pet.
Its lack of fear when it came to people and traffic made it hard for police to get the animal out of the road. Eventually animal control sedated the deer with a tranquilizer. The deer did not survive its capture, however, and no one has come forward to accept responsibility for the deer. Jordan speculates that’s because having wild animals as pets is illegal. The cause of death for the deer has not been determined, though stress from the incident, illness, and a reaction to the tranquilizer have not been ruled out.
