Yesterday, a North Carolina Senate committee approved a bill in favor of abandoning the Electoral College system.
Lawmakers say North Carolina is largely ignored by presidential candidates because of its small number of electoral votes. Similar legislation has been introduced in 40 states, but so far only Maryland has passed it into law. Dissenters fear the change would hurt small rural states where the voting population might have a smaller impact than their electoral votes. The bill’s next stop is a full state Senate vote. A companion measure awaits committee action in the House.
