WAMY, or Watauga, Avery, Mitchell and Yancey, has expanded its home gardening project.
Thanks to the efforts of local community groups and government grants, WAMY was able to give five spots at Leola Street Community Garden to those in need. WAMY has not stopped there, however. Now fresh vegetables can be available to homebound or apartment-dwelling High Country residents who meet the federal poverty guidelines through container gardens, according to WAMY’s Colleen Bare. Container gardens are plastic bags that contain topsoil, allowing people to garden without a backyard. Right now, WAMY has seven container gardens available.People interested in receiving the service or volunteering should contact Bare at (828) 264-2421.
