The Special Olympics are being held at Avery County High School today.
Yesterday, the torch that lit the 2006 Highland Regional games in Yancey County began its journey to Newland. Law enforcement from Yancey, Mitchell and Avery Counties ran the torch 33 miles along U.S. Highway 19-E from Yancey to Newland Town Square. This morning, the flame was carried to Avery County High School where it lit the Special Olympics Cauldron during opening ceremonies. Special Olympic athletes from Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, Watauga, Madison, and McDowell counties participated in track and field events, volleyball, bocce, and play activities.
