| Governor Easley and ASU Reaction to VA Tech |

In light of the Virginia Tech tragedy...Governor Mike Easley says he would like to see a clearinghouse of ideas dedicated to improving security on college campuses. Easley said the state and local leaders have made the safety of public schools a priority in recent years, but not as much attention has been given to North Carolina’s colleges and universities. While college leaders revisit their emergency plans, the governor acknowledges it will be a daunting task as many universities are the size of a small city. Equally important said Easley is how the schools respond to a troubled student. The governor says all of these ideas -- including criminal background checks on students -- deserve careful consideration as efforts continue to improve safety on North Carolina's college campuses.
A memorial service was held on Appalachian State University’s campus last night on Sanford Mall. The service provided an opportunity for Appalachian students, staff, and faculty to reflect on what happened at Virginia Tech. ASU has set up a memorial table for students to express their thoughts and concerns to the Virginia Tech Family in the Plemmons Student Union. These personal comments will be forwarded to the Virginia Tech campus.
