After pacing Appalachian State University baseball’s potent offense in a series victory at West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga, Mountaineer designated hitter Noah Holmes (Rockwell, N.C./East Rowan) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Holmes hit .462 (6-for-13) with a double, two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored to help lead Appalachian State (27-19) to a pair of wins in the three-game weekend series at Gonzaga (32-16-1). Five of Holmes’ six hits came in the Mountaineers’ two victories — a 6-2 win in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader and a 13-3 rout in Sunday’s series finale. He went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored in Saturday’s nightcap and was 2-for-5 with a double, homer and career-high-tying four RBI in Sunday’s romp.
Behind Holmes, Appalachian scored 19 runs in two game against a Gonzaga pitching staff that brought a 3.32 team ERA into the weekend and became the first visiting team to win a series at GU this season. Half of Holmes’ six hits came against two of the nation’s top pitchers — All-American Marco Gonzalez (1-for-4) and WCC Pitcher of the Year candidate Tyler Olson (2-for-3). Holmes is the first Mountaineer this season to be named SoCon Player of the Week. The honor is the first of his career.
Holmes (.304 avg, five HR, 26 RBI) and the Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday night at No. 2 North Carolina (45-6). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
