The Hickory High baseball team lived to play another day as the Red Tornadoes wiped out 2-0 and 4-2 deficits and defeated Kings Mountain 5-4 in ten innings in the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A State Playoffs.
Andrew Baker scampered home on a wild pitch from Mountaineers reliever Alex Reynolds for the walk-off score that now moves Hickory (14-10) into the second round after Friday night's come-from-behind victory at home. The Red Tornadoes tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Bryson Stirewalt struck out with one out, but he reached on a wild pitch third strike. Davis Hanvey walked and Tyler Pait flied out before Zach Jarrett belted a single to center field that was bobbled by Landon Bolin, allowing Stirewalt to score. That made it, 4-3. Joseph Sadowski then singled to center to bring home Hanvey sending the game into extra innings.
The Red Tornadoes will play Asheville (12-13), the No.2 seed from the Mountain Athletic 3A/4A Conference, at home Tuesday night. Asheville defeated R.S. Central 5-1 in the first round Friday night.
