After hitting safely in all 16 games that he played in April, Appalachian State University baseball’s Will Callaway (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Month, the league office announced on Friday. Callaway hit a gaudy .435 (30-for-69) with six doubles, four home runs, 21 RBI, 19 runs scored and a .696 slugging percentage in 16 games last month. By hitting safely in all 16 contests, he put together Appalachian State’s longest hitting streak of the season, which he extended to 17 games by going 3-for-3 in Friday’s series opener versus Elon.
The senior shortstop had multiple hits in 10 of his 16 games in April, including a string of five-straight multi-hit efforts from April 12-17. He also drove in two or more runs in five of the 16 contests, including a career-high five RBI in the Mountaineers’ 9-5 win over Georgia Southern on April 5.
Making Callaway’s outstanding April even more impressive is the fact that he played the final six games of the month with a hand injury sustained versus Campbell on April 17. The player-of-the-month honor is the first of Callaway’s career and the first for a Mountaineer this season.
