The State Patrol identified the man killed and the Ashe woman and her two children hurt in a two-vehicle wreck from Monday morning in Jefferson. The crash occurred at the intersection of N.C. 16 and US 221 in Jefferson, just past the Corner Market just before 9:30 a.m. Trooper J.D. Brown, of the N.C. Highway Patrol said a 2005 blue Nissan Frontier, driven by Donald Thompson, 65, of Jefferson, was traveling South on Highway 221, and as his Nissan entered the intersection, it struck the 2005 black Jeep 4x4, of Roxanne Severt, 33, of Jefferson, who had her two young daughters as passengers. Blue Ridge Medical Transported Thompson, Severt and the two children to Ashe Memorial Hospital where Thompson was pronounced dead, the two girls were treated and released, and where Roxanne Severt was admitted for treatment. Trooper Brown said investigators are looking into whether Thompson might have had a heart attack or other medical condition to cause the accident. First responders, the Ashe County Sheriff’s Department, Jefferson Police Department, and the Ashe County Rescue Squad aided the N.C. Highway Patrol at the scene.
