It was an emotional day on Saturday for Watauga girl's lacrosse coach Holly Quick and her players. The Pioneers (3-7) finished their season and celebrated Senior Day at Leigh Wallace Memorial Field. While the results were less than favorable, the Pioneers said good-bye to ten seniors that were the foundation of the program when it became a varsity sport.
"We lost, but the girls played hard the entire game," Quick said. "The ceremony for our ten seniors after the game was very nice and quite emotional. All of these seniors were freshmen when Leigh first started coaching this team. We normally choose a player of the game after every contest. But on Saturday, we kind of gave it to all the seniors."
The Pioneers lost to No.3 Lake Norman 21-3. Taelor Critcher and Ellie Sloboda scored a goal apiece. Goaltender Keirsten Henson made six saves; Ava Moody won a draw and ground ball; Katie Marks won a pair of draws and a ground ball; Courtney Kapral won three ground balls; Carly Moser won two draws and two ground balls; McKayla Wheeler won three ground balls; Gabby Moody won three ground balls and forced a turnover, and Cami Hastings had an interception.
The WHS boys will close out the regular season at Freedom Tuesday. The Pioneers (5-5) can clinch their first winning season by knocking off the Patroits. WHS will make its first playoff appearance on Friday.
