Chisholm Invited to Redskins’ Rookie Camp PDF Print

Former Appalachian State University running back Rod Chisholm (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) has been invited to the Washington Redskins’ upcoming rookie camp, which will be held Friday-Sunday (May 3-5) at Redskins Park in Ashburn, Va. Should the Redskins be impressed by Chisholm’s performance at the rookie camp, the team can offer him a free-agent contract to remain with the organization. If he does not receive a contract offer from Washington, Chisholm will remain a free agent and free to sign with any National Football League team.
Chisholm rushed for 398 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons as a Mountaineer. A talented running back, Chisholm’s career was riddled by injuries and other setbacks. He redshirted as a true freshman in 2008, missed the entire 2011 campaign after failing to meet NCAA academic eligibility requirements and, after earning the starting assignment during the 2012 preseason, sustained a hand injury in the season opener at East Carolina and was limited to just 41 carries as a senior.
However, despite the on- and off-field misfortune, Chisholm’s perseverance and leadership skills made him one of Appalachian State’s most popular players among teammates, coaches and fans. Most notably, after being academically ineligible as a junior, he not only regained his eligibility but earned a spot on the Appalachian State athletics’ academic honor roll. He was voted a team captain by his teammates in 2012.
On Saturday, five other members of Appalachian State’s 2012 Southern Conference championship squad secured spots on NFL rosters. Punter/place kicker Sam Martin (Fayetteville, Ga./Starr’s Mill) was selected by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round (165th overall) of the NFL Draft and defensive back Demetrius McCray (Covington, Ga./Newton) was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars two rounds later (seventh round — 210th overall). Shortly following the conclusion of the draft, linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough (Decatur, Ga./Cedar Grove), running back Steven Miller (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and defensive back Troy Sanders (Chester, S.C./Chester) agreed to join the Redskins, Lions and Atlanta Falcons, respectively, as free agents.
