The Watauga High girl's soccer team chalked up another win Wednesday night. The Pioneers (8-4-3 overall; 6-2-1 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) knocked off Fred T. Foard 3-2 in a NW3A/4A Conference game at Jack Groce Stadium.
The Pioneers chalked up their first straight win, and they find themselves four games over .500 in conference play with three games left with St. Stephens, Foard and Hickory left on the schedule. The Pioneers also have a non-conference game at home against Enka Monday night. Saturday's scheduled game with North Bumcombe has been cancelled.
Hannah Younger paced WHS with two goals and an assist. Ivy Wilcox scored WHS' first goal; Lillie Brady had an assist.
The JV team played Fred T. Foard to a 2-2 tie. Meghan Gottfried scored both WHS goals. The Pioneers take on St. Stephens at home Friday night.

Schubert No-Hits Pioneers

Lexi Schubert was a two-headed monster on Wednesday afternoon. The Fred T. Foard senior tossed a no-hitter as the Tigers blanked WHS 14-0 in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference game at the WHS Softball Complex. WHS' only base runner reached on an error, spoiling Schubert's perfect game.
Schubert stuck out 11 batters in the win. She also helped her own cause with two hits and two runs-batted-in. The Pioneers made four errors.
The Tigers broke the game open with seven runs in the second inning. The game was called after five innings because of the ten-run mercy rule. The Pioneers (5-10 overall; 2-9 NW3A/4A) have lost three in a row.
WHS will host St. Stephens Friday night. It will be "Senior Night", and the JV game will be played first, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

WHS Tennis Produces Three Regional Qualifiers

The Watauga High boy's tennis team had produced a conference champion in doubles play and three regional qualifiers at the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference qualifier at South Caldwell High in Sawmills, N.C., on Monday.
Dristen Trate qualified for regionals in singles play. He reached the finals and lost to Jackson Walch of Alexander Central in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, in the finals. It was an all-WHS final in doubles play.
The doubles team of Landon Taylor and Harrison Battle defeated teammates Caleb Gould and Brody O'Neal, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the championship match. Both doubles teams advance to regionals next week.
The Class 4A Western Regionals will be held at Ardrey Kell High in Charlotte on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4. The top four finishers in singles and doubles play will advance to the state finals. The state championships will be held at the Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh, N.C., May 10-11.
The state dual team playoffs begin Tuesday, April 30. The Pioneers (5-1 NW3A/4A; 7-5 overall), the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the NW3A/4A, will host a first-round match. According to head coach Scott Taylor, it looks like the Pioneers might play Greensboro Grimsley from the Metro 4A Conference in that first-round match.
