A moped driver was injured as he slammed into the side of a Ford SUV at the intersection of US 421 at Old 421south just after 4pm Wednesday. The driver of the Explorer, Lucas Bunch, 21, said he had the green turn arrow and was making the left turn onto 421 coming from the Dog Park
area when the moped ran the light and slammed into the driver’s side of his SUV. Bunch said the cyclist had cuts and other injuries and was complaining of back and neck pain as he called 9-1-1, but an air ambulance was cancelled upon arrival of Watauga Medics, who transported the man to Watauga Medical Center. The State Patrol identified the moped driver as 44-year old Dana Joseph Dunn of Radio Hill Road in West Jefferson. He was cited for Failure to Stop for the Red Light while being treated at Watauga Medical Center. Bunch, just moved here from Monroe, had been on his way to work for his first day at a new job when the crash occurred.
