L-R Wins Fourth Straight SAC Tournament PDF Print

The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (35-14) defeated Catawba (32-19), 7-5 and 8-0, Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field to win the 2013 Food Lion SAC Tournament Championship, its fourth straight league tournament title. Lenoir-Rhyne, which won the conference tournament for the eighth time in school history, earned the South Atlantic Conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 7, Catawba 5
L-R junior outfielder Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) hit a three-run home run and helped the Bears rally from a five-run deficit to force an extra game. Lenoir-Rhyne was trailing by a 5-4 score entering the top of the seventh inning but came through with a three-run frame.
L-R freshman designated player Ashley Oliver (Newton, N.C.) broke a five-all tie with the game-winning, two-run single in the inning. Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) struck out seven batters in seven scoreless innings of relief in the victory.
Catawba's Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, Pa.) drove in two runs as part of the Indians' five-run first inning while Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C.) suffered the loss and fell to 25-9 on the year. Offensively for Lenoir-Rhyne, both senior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) and junior third baseman Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, N.C.) finished with three hits for the Bears.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 8, Catawba 0 (five innings)
Hoskins (16-6) threw a three-hit shutout while the Bears put the game out of reach early with six runs in the first two innings en route to the win. The shutout was Hoskins' 10th of the season while senior outfielder Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.) finished with two hits and two runs batted in for the Bears, who run-ruled the Indians in five innings.
Lenoir-Rhyne freshman catcher Lauren Elder (Taylorsville, N.C.) ended the game with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth inning. L- R finished the contest with 13 hits and were led offensively by Mizelle with three hits and Jarman with three runs scored. Catawba's Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, N.C.) fell to 3-7 on the year after suffering the loss on the mound for the Indians.
