Lenoir-Rhyne (31-13) opened the 2013 Food Lion SAC Softball Tournament in thrilling fashion with a 6-4 victory over Mars Hill (24-15) Thursday morning at
Whitley Field on the campus of Catawba College.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) ended the game with a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Bears to the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne, the third seed in the tournament, will face seventh-seeded Wingate (30-18-1) in the semifinals on Friday at 9:00 a.m. Mars Hill is the sixth seed in the tournament.
L-R jumped out to a 3-0 lead highlighted by a two-run single from freshman shortstop Chelsey Long (Nakina, N.C.) in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Mars Hill, however, rallied to take a 4-3 advantage with two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
The Lions' Shaundee Woosley (Lexington, N.C.) had a two-run single in the sixth while Mars Hill took advantage of a Lenoir-Rhyne error to take the lead in the seventh frame.
Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) improved to 17-8 on the year after earning the win while Fellmeth finished with four hits to lead the Bears offensively.
Taylor Hussey (Randleman, N.C.) fell to 11-7 on the season for Mars Hill, who faces second-seeded Anderson at 11:30 a.m., at Salisbury Community Park in an elimination game on Friday morning.
