The Watauga High girl's soccer team nailed down the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Thursday night by knocking off South Caldwell 3-1 at Jack Groce Stadium. Hannah Younger, who has been a scoring machine of late, tallied twice in the win.
The WHS senior has six goals this week. The Pioneers (6-4-3 overall; 4-2-1 NW3A/4A) led 2-1 at halftime. Younger's goal in the second half put the contest out of reach. Kat Welsch had a goal and an assist; Lillie Brady had an assist.
Mackenzie Nelson got the start in goal and made four saves; Kursten Stang finished up by playing the final 14 minutes and had a save. The Pioneers take on Hibriten at home next Tuesday night.

The Watauga High boy's tennis team knocked off St. Stephens 5-4 Thursday night in its regular-season finale. It was also WHS' (7-5 overall; 5-1 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) fourth win in a row.
The Pioneers finish league play as the No.2 seed overall, but as the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the conference. Will Spinetto and Noah Moomaw made it all possible with a huge win at No.3 doubles.
That duo, which has been stellar this season, defeated Zach Eddins and Garrett Bolter of the Indians 10-5 to snap a 4-4 tie and secure the match. Landon Taylor and Harrison Battle teamed up for a win at No.1 doubles to give WHS a 4-3 lead. But the Indians tied the match with a win at No.2 doubles.
Dristen Trate at No.3 singles, Caleb Gould at No.4 and Josh Lampkins at No.6, rallied WHS from an early 2-0 deficit.
The Pioneers will compete in the NW3A/4A Conference qualifer on Monday. The Wilkes Central match that was rained out on March 25, and was to be played today, has been rained out and will not be rescheduled.
