The Pfeiffer Women's Lacrosse Team (14-1), ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II, defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (7-6) by a 17-6 score Wednesday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field.
Pfeiffer's Sarah Daly (New Market, Md.) finished with four goals while Katherine Athens (Huntingtown, Md.) scored three times to lead the Falcons to the win. Lenoir-Rhyne, which saw its four-match winning streak come to an end, was led by sophomore Mary Minick's (Marietta, Ga.) four goals despite the loss.
Three straight goals by the Bears capped off by a score from Minick cut Pfeiffer's margin to 4-3 with 6:36 left in the first period but the Falcons responded with a 4-0 run to take control again.
The Falcons' Courtney Luther (Frederick, Md.) added two goals and two assists as Pfeiffer held the advantage in both shots taken (39-15) and ground balls (27-19) in the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne also received goals from sophomores Lauren Donovan (Hollywood, Md.) and Jamie Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) in the losing effort. Pfeiffer's goalkeeper, Rachel McCarthy (Austin, Texas), stopped six shots on the afternoon in the win while L-R sophomore Allison Senft (Marietta, Ga.) took the setback in goal. Senft was credited with nine saves.
L-R hosts fourth-ranked Rollins on Sunday afternoon at Moretz Stadium beginning at Noon. Pfeiffer is the second seed in the Conference Carolinas Tournament and will take on third-seeded Queens Saturday in Burlington, N.C., at 4:30 p.m.
