Austin Graham seems to be coming into his own. And the Watauga High junior is getting hot on the links at the right time with regionals right around the corner. Graham, who will be a featured guest on the "Dug Out Show" tonight before the WHS baseball broadcast on Classic Hits 100.7 FM, fired an even-par 72 on Monday at the Brushy Mountain Golf Course in Taylorsville, N.C. He finished two shots behind the leading medalist, Frankie Wyatt of Hickory, who paced the field with a two-under par 70 on the par 72 course.
"I set a lot of goals coming into this year," Graham said. "Everyone is going to have bad holes, but coach (Mike) Northern always talks about staying positive, and that's really helped me. He makes us believe in ourselves. That's why I believe we've been so good this year. But we don't want to get ahead of ourselves. We still have a lot of matches left. And we're playing pretty well right now. Getting to regionals is possible. It's been a while since we've been there."
Team wise, the Pioneers finished ahead of Alexander Central (the host school on Monday) and South Caldwell in Monday's Northwestern 3A/4A Conference meet. The Spartans finished in a fourth-place tie with St. Stephens. Both squads fired a 323; Alexander Central finished last with a score of 365 on its home course.
Hickory bested the field with a team score of 305; Hibriten finished five shots back in second place with a 310. Austin Northern was nine shots over and finished with an 81 for the Pioneers; Cameron Taylor fired an 82.
"I'm just playing within myself," Graham said. "I just want to play my game and not worry about what the other players are doing."
The Pioneers travel to the Catawba Country Club for a NW3A/4A match. Fred T. Foard will host. The WHS baseball pre-game show airs tonight at 6 p.m.
