Three-time defending champion Chattanooga has a five-stroke lead and Mocs freshman Emily McLennan is tied for the individual lead with Elon freshman Sunna Vidisdottir after Sunday’s first round of the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship on Moss Creek Golf Club’s North Course.
The Mocs shot a 9-over 297 Sunday and have all four counting scores in the top five of the individual standings. McLennan, a freshman from Queensland, Australia, shot an even-par 72 to pace Chattanooga, sharing the day-one lead with 14 pars. Chattanooga’s Jordan Britt, the defending individual medalist, and teammates Agathe Sauzon and Porsche Campbell are among a six-way tie for fifth after opening-round 3-over 75s.
Elon’s Vidisdottir had 13 pars and an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole in her first round, finishing with an even-par 72.  The Reykjavik, Iceland, native and McLennan were the only two golfers in the 50-player field not to shoot over par for the day.
Furman is second after day one, shooting a 14-over 302 Sunday. The Paladins were paced by freshman Valentina Romero’s 1-over 73, which put her alone in third place. The top three finishers Sunday were all freshmen.
College of Charleston sits third after shooting a 305, while Samford is fourth at 312. Appalachian State is fifth after day one with a 313, followed by UNCG and Elon in a tie for sixth with matching 315s. Wofford is eighth at 322, while Western Carolina (324) and The Citadel (346) round out the 10-team field.
UNCG freshman Sammie Buchanan had the individual highlight of the day with a hole-in-one on the par-3 seventh hole.
The second round will tee off at 8 a.m. Monday, with The Citadel and Wofford getting things started. Leaders Chattanooga, Furman and College of Charleston tee off at 10:30 a.m. Live stats can be found at and will be updated every three holes. The 54-hole tournament will conclude Tuesday.
