The Hickory Crawdads entered Sunday night's game against the Kannapolis Intimidators looking for their first series win of the season, but what the 'Dads got was their first shutout loss of 2013 as Intimidators starter Myles Jay tossed eighth shutout innings en route to Hickory's 6-0 loss.
Jaye was dominant from the first batter, as the right-hander held the Crawdads to just three hits and four total base runners while becoming the first South Atlantic League pitcher to toss eight innings this year. The 21-year-old also struck out seven while walking just one in winning his third game of the year.
Only two Hickory hitters even reached third base in the game, but Joe Maloney in the fifth and Jorge Alfaro in the seventh were both left stranded. Alfaro (1-4, 2B, 3 Ks), Ryan Rua (1-3, 2B) and Jordan Akins (1-3) collected the only hits for the 'Dads while Maloney took the one free pass.
The Crawdads pitchers, meanwhile, were not nearly as effective. Starter Kelvin Vasquez lasted just 3.2 innings and walked five batters while allowing three runs on one hit. Righty reliever John Kukuruda followed with 3.1 innings and three runs allowed on nine hits. Jose Valdespina finished the game with a scoreless inning with one hit allowed.
Kannapolis spread their scoring out over four innings, plating two in the second, one in the third, two more in the 5th, and finishing with one in the 7th. Right fielder Jason Coats led the Intimidators offense going 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Jaye (3-0) becomes the first three-win pitcher in the SAL this year with the victory, while Vasquez (0-1) picked up his first loss of the year.
The Crawdads (4-7) and Intimidators (7-4) split their four-game series two games apiece with the Kannapolis win. The 'Dads will now head to Asheville to start a 3-game series with the tourists. Game one on Monday is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
NOTES: The 'Dads continue their 7-game road trip with a 3-game set in Asheville before returning home for a 4-game series against Charleston starting on Thursday....Individual Tickets for all Crawdads home games are available right now at Hickorycrawdads.com or by calling (828) 322-3000!  Group outings, corporate partnerships, Buffalo Wild Wings Claw Club memberships and Ticket Books are also available right now by calling the Front Office at (828) 322-3000.
