Madison Bumgarner just keeps rolling along. The Hickory, N.C., native, who attended South Caldwell High School, won his third consecutive start Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Il. The Giants (8-4), thanks to Bumgarner, who allowed two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts, defeated the Chicago Cubs, 3-2.
Bumgarner (3-0) walked two, one intentional, in 6 2/3 innings. The Cubs (4-7) also hurt themselves. They left seven men on base, leaving the bases loaded in the second, and they left two men on in the sixth and eighth innings. Alfonso Soriano had three hits for the Cubs.
Bumgarner coughed up a two-run homer to pinch-hitter Dioner Navarro in the seventh inning that chased him from the game and raised his ERA to 1.77 on the season. The left-hander has 17 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings this season.
"I've definitely still got some work to do," he said. "It can be better."
Bumgarner's next start is projected for Friday against San Diego. He finished 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA and nearly a strikeout per inning in five starts versus the Padres last season.
