Pioneers Fall Short At Butler PDF Print

The Watauga High boy's lacrosse team staged a furious second-half rally on Saturday, but came up short in the end. Matthews-Butler, which led 9-3 at halftime, staved off an eight-goal, second-half rally by the Pioneers and won the match, 13-11. It was a bitter sweet day for the Pioneers overall. WHS (2-5) suffered its fifth consecutive loss, but senior Nick Williams continued his hot scoring pace. He scored six goals in the loss and set a new school record with his 39th goal of the year. Williams broke his old record of 37 goals, which he set last season.
"And we still have five games left in the season," said WHS coach Chris Wallace. "Nick is a solid player. If he had played lacrosse for four years, I really believe he could have been a Division I player. He's fast, he's strong, and he's a consistent scorer. He's just a great player."
The Pioneers travel to Freedom on Friday. The WHS girls did not play on Saturday. The match was postponed because Butler had its prom on Saturday night. No make up date has been announced for that match. The WHS girls play Lake Norman Charter at home on Friday.
